ABOUT US

Founded in 2001 by Sensei Valman, SKDA (Shotokan Karate-Do Alliance) was born from decades of experience under prestigious organisations such as the JKA, KUGB, and others. Since then, SKDA has built a strong reputation teaching in schools, community centres, and through partnerships with charitable organisations across the UK and internationally.

We regularly train, collaborate, and exchange knowledge with other martial arts organisations at local, national, and international levels, keeping our teaching both authentic and current.

Our Philosophy
At SKDA, we have dedicated years to researching Funakoshi's original Karate and its deep-rooted history—from ancient China, through the islands of Okinawa, and into modern Japan. While Shotokan Sport Karate has become the UK’s most popular style since the 1960s, many organisations are now rediscovering its traditional origins.

Our approach blends modern Shotokan Karate with old-style self-defence techniques, aiming to:
  • Debunk common myths about Karate
  • Deepen understanding of Kata (forms)
  • Introduce traditional weapons for more experienced students

  • "We believe in Karate
    not just as a sport,
but as a lifelong martial art
    rooted in discipline, respect,
    and practical self-defence".
